Tench Vineyards farms a 61-acre property in eastern Oakville just west of the Silverado Trail, bought in 1965 by John Tench — a Welsh-born Shell Oil executive who retired that same year — and his wife Joan. For decades the family sold fruit rather than making wine: a 1977 lot was picked by a local school band and made by Joseph Phelps into a "Jazz Band Cabernet Sauvignon" whose proceeds funded the band, and Niebaum-Coppola produced the first Tench vineyard designate in the 1980s. Granddaughter Margaret Tench and her husband Rem Reigersman, who met at the University of St Andrews, built a winery and caves on the site in 2016-17 and launched their own label with the 2017 vintage. Production stays near 500 cases from iron-rich benchland soils shared with neighbors Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and BOND's St. Eden.
