Tres Sabores is Julie Johnson's 35-acre ranch on the western Rutherford bench, sharing a property line with Inglenook. Johnson trained as a public health nurse at Columbia and was still practicing when she co-founded Frog's Leap in 1981 with John Williams and Larry Turley; she bought this property in 1987 and certified it organic with CCOF in 1991, among the very first in Napa Valley. Her own label didn't release until the 1999 vintage. Roughly 13 acres are planted, including dry-farmed heritage Zinfandel dating to the early 1970s still on AXR-1 rootstock, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. The name means "three flavors" — vine, terroir and good company — and the working farm also yields century-old olives, pomegranates and Meyer lemons among sheep, goats and guinea fowl.
