Tusk Estates is one of the most exclusive Cabernet Sauvignon labels in Napa Valley. It is owned by Michael Uytengsu, Tim Martin and Philippe Melka, and Melka, one of the valley's most sought-after winemakers, makes the wine. The first vintage was the 2008 Tusk Cabernet Sauvignon, and a second wine, L'Orange, a Bordeaux-style blend, followed in 2016. The fruit comes from about 52 acres across two Oakville parcels, along with grapes from Pritchard Hill and other Napa Valley sites, giving the wines the depth and polish that Oakville is famous for. Production is tiny, about 200 to 300 cases a year, and the mailing list has a waiting list of seven to ten years, which helps explain why Tusk bottles command high prices on the secondary market. For HeyVino readers, Tusk is mainly a name to know rather than a wine to find on sale, but it shows how far the top tier of Napa Cabernet has gone in recent decades.
