V. Sattui Winery traces its roots to 1885, when Vittorio Sattui, an immigrant from Genoa, Italy, founded a winery in San Francisco. Prohibition closed it in 1920, and the business stayed dormant until Vittorio's great-grandson Dario Sattui revived the family name and opened the St. Helena winery in 1976. V. Sattui has an unusual business model for Napa: its wines are sold only at the winery or online, never in stores, which has made its tasting room and Italian-style marketplace one of the busiest stops in the valley. Visitors come for the large deli, the shaded picnic grounds and a lineup that spans Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, sweet wines and much more, and the winery hosts events such as an annual Harvest Ball. As of 2013 it was selling more than 60,000 cases a year, all direct. Dario Sattui later built Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga. V. Sattui is a fun, family-friendly Napa stop with frequent direct-to-consumer deals.
