Launny Steffens spent his career in finance and, by his son's account, wasn't entirely serious when he put in a bid on a forty-acre Spring Mountain property in 1999 — the call came a week later. He and his wife Weezie got a site sitting at 2,020 feet above the fog line, planted in the early 1980s to eight acres each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The name draws on that split and on numerology the couple picked up traveling in Asia: seven for luck in the West, eight for prosperity and happiness in the East. Son Wesley Steffens now serves as estate director and winemaker, working a deliberately non-interventionist program, and Martha McClellan — of Harlan Estate, Sloan, Checkerboard and her own Levy & McClellan — joined as winemaker in 2014.
